Resulting from recording work carried out in several regions of Guinea Conakry over the period November 2003 to January 2004, Elaeis Guineensis is a series of compositions and performances featuring phonographies and found objects, manipulated on location or in a studio.
Conceived here as a listening quest, the fieldwork was prompted by questions about African totemism, and revolved around visits to the Sousou, Peul and Kpélé (Guerzé) local communities. The recorded sites and the collected items (plants or minerals) all play a significant role in the encountered cosmogonies. The sound recordings, instruments and modes of composition were guided by the relationships and exchanges that occurred in the host villages, whether in day-to-day situations or at key moments in the life of the community.
