Les asymptotes was commissioned by France Musique's Création Mondiale radio programme, in partnership with Ina-GRM (Musical Research Group) at Radio France.

"Acoustic instruments," Thomas Tilly points out, "often try to get closer to electronics. Likewise, Electronic manipulators seek to get closer to organicity through their devices. As a field recordist, Thomas Tilly uses microphones to look for electronic sounds in the field organism. What interests him is the interplay between the organic and the electronic.

As with all acousmatic music, Les asymptotes was created in several stages, over several time spans: sound recording in a natural environment, a period of reflection around these sounds to let them settle, recording of the synthetic sounds, and finally mixing the various sonic sources".
