Embedded in the city of Lorient and hidden from view, the shelter consists of two main rooms – each 80 m2 – and two corridors. Only one of the corridors is currently open, as the only access. The purpose of the shelter was to protect civilians from air strikes during World War II, and it is only equipped with benches and a very basic ventilation and lighting systems.
The particular situation of the visitor in this space means that he or she is at no time aware of what is happening outside. Only sound, filtered through the thick walls, can restore this connection.
This piece, presented as a sound installation within the shelter, explores this link to the ‘outside’. It offers a listening experience based on measurements aimed at describing the volume of air on the exterior surface. The information gathered during these surveys - notes, measurements, texts and sound recordings - incorporates the characteristics of this space, using them as compositional elements.
